Apple Allows EU Developers to Integrate Alternative App Marketplaces in App Store Connect
,

Apple announces the expansion of its App Store Connect platform to enable European Union (EU) developers to integrate alternative app marketplaces. These changes come ahead of the launch of iOS 17.4, which is set to transform the app ecosystem within the EU, providing developers with new avenues for app distribution outside of the traditional App Store.

Apple’s App Store Connect now supports the integration of alternative app marketplaces, offering EU developers the opportunity to distribute iOS apps through channels other than the App Store.
These alternative marketplaces serve as platforms where iOS apps can be downloaded directly from websites or web browsers, providing users with an alternative to the official App Store.

Apple is accepting submissions for the Notarization process, which is mandatory for all apps distributed through alternative marketplaces. This process ensures that apps undergo rigorous security checks to mitigate the risk of malware and other malicious content.

Developers must adhere to Apple’s updated business terms to integrate alternative app marketplaces or submit apps for Notarization.
The business terms include a Core Technology Fee, requiring app marketplaces to pay €0.50 per install, with apps also subject to the same fee after reaching 1 million installs.

With the integration of alternative app marketplaces into App Store Connect, developers gain access to enhanced testing capabilities through TestFlight.
TestFlight now supports beta testing for apps distributed via alternative marketplaces, including those utilizing alternative browser engines and third-party payment providers for transactions.

Apple’s decision to allow EU developers to integrate alternative app marketplaces into App Store Connect marks a significant shift in its app distribution policies. By offering developers more flexibility in how they distribute their iOS apps, Apple aims to foster innovation and competition within the app ecosystem while maintaining robust security measures.
